About Us
Welcome to Sidmouth Gig Club
Founded in the summer of 2009, we're here to promote and encourage participation in the amateur sport of rowing, serving the communities of Sidmouth and surrounding areas. The pilot gig racing circuit extends from the westernmost Isles of Scilly, all over Cornwall and along the south and west coasts as well as overseas such as the MPM event in Holland.
We are a member of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) who govern the sport in the UK, and provide standards, rules and policies for clubs.
Additionally, our status as a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) means we are tasked with promoting and encouraging the sport to all sections of the community and to keep subscriptions at levels that will not pose a significant obstacle to participating.
Our history....Sidmouth Gig Club was born out of the desire of the Founding Chairman to bring the sport of gig racing to Sidmouth - a public meeting was held in the summer of 2009 and what a meeting that was!! Over forty people turned out that first night and within two months, with a dedicated band of steering committee members, Sidmouth Gig Club was born. Fundraising has been at the heart of the committee, and in August 2010 we were very proud to launch our first training boat 'Alma'.
The club is run by a committee that is voted in at the AGM. We meet regularly to discuss and decide on plans for the club. The current Committee are:
Chairman - Nigel Winchester
Vice Chairman & Social Committee Chair - Julie Turner
Secretary - Richard Huntingdon
Rowing Captains - (Men) Ed Rhodes, (Ladies) Lyn Bagwell
Treasurer - Mary Bagwell

AGM Minutes - Sept 21st 2010
Chairman Nigel Winchester opened the meeting with the Chairman’s report, Nigel stated that Sidmouth Gig Club was formed some 12 months and at its heart is the aim to get people fit and enjoying Sidmouth’s top asset - the sea. We are a Community Amateur Sports Club, which is already very much family orientated. Due to gig racing’s inclusive nature, anyone can row- and we intend to get many of Sidmouth’s folk out on the water!
To date, the club has 62 founder members, each paying £65, & 16 business founder members each paying £250. This has given the Club a great start to its fundraising campaign & together with our social evenings, we have raised in excess of £10,000.
A Steering Committee with about 9 /10 members was set up 12 months ago and between us we have done everything to get the club off the ground. We are now looking for more volunteers to step forward and help with some of the tasks, especially once we start the rowing properly. The Club is now affiliated to the Port Royal Club so all our members can enjoy these facilities for free.
